The ritual music of Seoul's ancestral shrine honoring outstanding Confucians including Confucius and Korean scholars, is highly stylized.

It is performed at rites held twice a year, in spring and autumn. The music and dance performed in these rites were introduced into Korea from China in the 12th century.

The rites themselves are no longer held in China. The ritual music currently performed was composed by Pak Yon during King Sejong's reign. It originally consisted of twelve pieces but only six are played today.
