As revealed in Koguryo murals, the long overcoat has been part of the Korean wardrobe since ancient times. These overgarments were originally worn to fend off the winter cold, but as time passed, they were included in a growing category of ceremonial attire, and were later adapted for use by the general public. The overcoat's design was similar to that of the jacket, but their tie or closures were higher on the chest and set to one side so they did not overlap the closure of the inner jacket.

Overcoats developed in great variety. They were standard attire for royalty, courtiers, and government officials and were worn by commoners on special occasions and for family rites. The white hemp overcoat has long been a symbol of the gentleman-scholar and remains a matter of pride for the people of the Andong region where many old upper class families still live. The top'o and the turumagi are alike except that the turumagi is cut fuller and is usually made of the finest hemp cloth from the Andong area.

고구려 벽화에서 볼 수 있듯이 긴 외투는 고대부터 한국의 옷장의 일부였다. 이 겉옷은 원래 겨울의 추위를 막기 위해 입었지만 시간이 지남에 따라 점점 늘어나는 의례복 범주에 포함되었고 나중에 일반 대중이 사용하도록 개조되었다. 외투의 디자인은 재킷과 유사하지만 넥타이나 여밈이 가슴 위쪽으로 높게 위치하여 한쪽으로 치워져 있어 재킷 내부의 여밈과 겹치지 않는다.

외투는 아주 다양하게 개발되었다. 왕족, 신하, 관료들의 표준 복장이었으며 평민들이 특별한 행사나 가족 의례에 입었다. 백마옷은 오랫동안 선비의 상징이었고 지금도 많은 노년층이 살고 있는 안동지방 사람들의 자부심으로 남아 있다. 도포와 투루마기는 투루마기를 더 촘촘하게 자르고 일반적으로 안동 지역의 최고급 삼베로 만든다는 점을 제외하면 비슷하다.
