Korea's most famous chili pepper market grew in front of the train station in Chechon, North Chungchong Province, when local growers and merchants began gathering there on a regular basis. At one time, there were nearly 100 stalls on either side of the stream that ran past the town market, but when the stream was covered to facilitate increased traffic, two separate markets formed: Chungang Market, which boasts of its links to the original market, and the modern Cheil Market, recently established near the town stadium.

The Chechon chili pepper markets are famous because the peppers sold there are of the finest quality, in both taste and color. The peppers come from Yongwol, Chongson, and Pyongchang in Kangwon Province. They are dried in Yongwol before being transported to Chechon. The highest quality peppers are sun-dried. These command a higher price than machine dried peppers. Recently some consumers have started to buy directly from farmers and dry the peppers themselves, but the markets in Chechon still bustle in October as Koreans prepare to make their winter kimchi.

한국에서 가장 유명한 고추 시장(제천 제일시장)은 지역 재배자와 상인들이 정기적으로 모이기 시작한 충북 제천의 기차역 앞에서 성장했다.(철도와 도로 교통의 중심지에 위치한 제천의 지리적 잇점) 한때 마을 시장을 지나는 개울 양쪽에는 거의 100개에 가까운 가판대가 있었지만 교통량을 늘리기 위해 개울을 덮자 두 개의 별도 시장이 형성되었다. 원조시장, 그리고 최근 구장근처에 조성된 현대제일시장이 그것이다.

제천고추시장은 맛과 빛깔이 가장 좋은 고추로 유명하다. 고추는 강원도 용월, 청선, 평창에서 온다. 영월에서 건조시켜 제천으로 운반한다. 최고 품질의 고추는 햇볕에 말린 것이다.(태양초) 이들은 기계 건조 고추보다 높은 가격에 거래된다. 일부 소비자들은 농가에서 직접 고추를 사서 직접 말리기 시작했지만 10월에도 제천 시장은 겨울 김치 담그기 준비로 북적거린다.

지금은 역사속으로 사라지고 제일고추시장 터에는 주상복합건물이 들어섰다.
